#2 Appear
This was a 50/50 experiment combining apple and pear juices to see if the flavours could be blended into a softer palate. The apple component itself was a mix of clear and hazy pressed apple juices; the pear used was a mixed hazy pear juice.
Deviations from Base Mead
Section titled “Deviations from Base Mead”This recipe lists only deviations from the Base Mead workflow. Follow the Base Mead procedure and ingredient list, applying the deviations below.
- Juice: Use 15 L total composed as a 50/50 split between apple and pear. Make the apple portion from a mix of clear and hazy apple juices and use a hazy pear juice for the pear portion (example: 7.5 L apple (mixed clear + hazy) + 7.5 L hazy pear).
Tasting Notes
Section titled “Tasting Notes”Semi-Dry
The final cyser was semi-dry. The pear was only vaguely present, the blend leaned apple-forward and the hoped-for softening of the palate was only partially achieved. While the drink was pleasant, the pear contribution was minimal — in hindsight it felt like a waste of pear.
Additional Notes
Section titled “Additional Notes”- For full stage-by-stage instructions, see the Base Mead recipe in this collection.
- If attempting this again, increase the pear proportion or use a pear-forward concentrate/juice to better preserve pear character.
